1944, a Year in the Life of Jan Smit by Jan Smit PDF Summary

Book Description: This is the story of the last year of the Second World War as seen through the eyes of a twelve-year-old boy. John was sent by his parents through the Winter Assistance for six weeks to the south of the German Reich on vacation. He could, because of the invasion of the Allies and the withdrawal of German troops, avoid going back to the Netherlands. This is about his musings of Germany being almost defeated. What he recounts here is true, but the special events are hard to believe. Jan Smit was born in 1931 on the barge of his father. During the great depression, his father commanded a ship and brought the whole family with him. His family ended up in IJmuiden. John studied at the Visserijschool and after many wanderings (including Rhodesia and Australia) and further studies, he settled with his wife in The Hague.
