Book Description: Alexander Brady was born in Kilkenney, Ireland on January 26, 1895. In 1904 he emigrated with his parents and brothers to Canada via Ellis Island and then to Toronto where he attended Oakwood Collegiate and the University of Toronto. He graduated with a B.A. in 1919 from the University of Toronto. He won a scholarship for study at Oxford University and graduated with a BA in 1921. Following this he taught history at United College Winnipeg. In 1924 he accepted a position in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto. He also continued his studies, receiving an MA in 1924 and PhD in 1926 from the University. During his nearly fifty years teaching at the University of Toronto, Prof. Brady became "one of the most distinguished and widely respected members of the Toronto staff" according to Elizabeth Wallace's article published in the A colleague, Dr. Robert Spencer, commented that Prof. Brady "was part of a group in the thirties that pioneered the study of international relations and Canada's place in the world".. He published numerous articles and several books during his career, among which were his widely acclaimed books D'Arcy McGee and Democracy in the Dominions. Prof. Brady was also active outside the University acting as conciliator of industrial disputes and served on various provincial and federal royal commissions. In recognition for his many academic and advisory activities, Prof. Brady received numerous honorary degrees, and was the first recipient of the Royal Society's medal for outstanding contributions to literature in his field. In addition, Prof. Brady loved poetry, Irish literature, bird watching and Prince Edward Island where he often spent holidays.
