Application of Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC) Technology to Roadway Paving. Construction Productivity Advancement Research (CPAR) Program by PDF Summary

Book Description: The purpose of this project was to investigate the performance of a roller-compacted concrete (RCC) pavement for use as a high-speed surface. A test section consisting of a small parking lot and a two-lane roadway was constructed. During construction, three major parameters were varied: paver speed, rolling amount, and joint spacing. The paver speed was varied to determine what effect, if any, this has on average lay-down density, average final density, rideability, skid resistance, load transfer, and density profiles. The average lay-down and final densities of the RCC pavement were determined using a nuclear density device, which determined the density of various depths throughout the pavement. The load transfer was determined at transverse joints and transverse cracks by using falling weight deflectometer data. The rolling amount was varied to determine its effect on all of the same properties as paver speed except lay-down density. The joint spacing was varied to examine an optimum spacing that would not develop intermediate cracking and would provide the desired rideability and load transfer. From this project, it was determined that no adjustments in paver speed, rolling (types of patterns), or joint spacing will significantly enhance RCC pavement properties so that it may be used for high-speed applications.
