All were talking short crop, and it was comfortnoly fixed in tht minds of the growers that there would be at least a 10 per cent shortage in the orange yield as compared with that of the previous year, when 24,5 00 cars of oranges were shipped, of which 18,000 cars were estimated to have been Navels. The awakening did not come until along in February, and even when' the shippers began to realize that they would have more fruit than they originally planned upon, they did not realize the seriousness of the situation, and many of them were content to hold for the May market, which had heretofore been the highest of the year, but which proved to be the lowest for this season, owing to the quantity of fruit offered. Other varieties were low In sympathy with Navels and Seedlings were down to nearly giveaway prices; the Seedling deal, in fact, very nearly proved a disastrous one for many operators, though but one went under entirely. Navels opened up fairly well last year and the ruling price for Christmas delivery for stock from both north and south that was untouched by the frost was $2 f. o. b. for the best and down to $1.35 cash for the poorest. The after-holiday market was low, as usual, but the February market was good, in fact the best of the year. The demand dragged somewhat in March, took a spurt in April, but from mid-April to the end of the season there was almost no cash market here in California, the fruit being rolled to take what price it could get. This season the market for southern fruit seems to be opening up fairly well and Orange county stock is being quoted at this writing at $1.50 a box, as against $1.35 to $1.45 for last season.
