Catalytic and Autocatalytic Peptide Networks by Yohei Yokobayashi PDF Summary

Book Description: The key feature that differentiates animate chemistry from inanimate chemistry is believed to lie in its complexity, the ability of the animate chemical systems to reproduce, to dynamically adapt to changes in environment, and to undergo Darwinian evolution. This thesis approaches the problem of chemical complexity using self-replicating peptides as a tool to design and construct various nonlinear chemical networks that exhibit various interesting emergent properties. In Chapter 2, an environmentally regulated replicator that adapts to the change in salt concentration is described. Chapter 3 explores the molecular ecology of two peptides that exhibit host-parasite dynamics. In Chapter 4, a minimal autocatalytic set of two nonreplicating peptides that engage in reciprocal catalysis is investigated. Finally, Chapter 5 illustrates the templating effect exerted by higher order complex, or self-assembling ligase. These results should contribute to not only to our understanding of nonlinear chemical systems, but also our ability to design de novo functional molecules especially peptides and proteins.
