Contemporary Considerations in the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Head and Neck Cancer by Philip C. Doyle PDF Summary

Book Description: This book, while a new text, has its origins in three earlier editions of a previously published book, Laryngectome Rehabilitation, edited by Robert Keith and Frederic L. Darley. This new version of that book provides a broader vision related to concerns influencing rehabilitation in those with head and neck cancer. Numerous and complex issues regarding voice, speech, and swallowing in those diagnosed with and treated for head and neck cancer are addressed. The chapters of this book provide comprehensive coverage of the changes that individuals experience following treatment for malignancies of the head and neck. Such individuals are challenged physically, physiologically, emotionally, communicatively, and socially. These challenges also affect family members, friends, and co-workers. The inherent multidimensionality and complexity of problems faced by individuals is acknowledged throughout the book. Chapters contained within the book are also included as citations in all chapters in an effort to aid the reader in integrating information from multiple chapters relative to rehabilitation. The book is divided into four distinct sections, Parts I through IV. * Part I includes six chapters that provide a larger, overarching context for multiple and diverse issue that impact the individual treated for head and neck cancer, as well as the manner and comprehensiveness with which care and rehabilitation is provided. * Part II includes eight chapters that address a variety of topics that focus on medical treatment interventions and related topics, as well as the influence of treatment on voice, speech, and swallowing. * Part III is comprised of nine chapters that primarily focus on numerous issues and concerns secondary to medical management of head and neck cancer and the posttreatment process of voice and speech management and rehabilitation. * Part IV concludes the book with six chapters that address essential and critical issues
