Book Description: So many approaches have been taken towards attaining gender equality in the work space. Approaches such as increasing recruitment slots/spaces, removing the gender pay gap, merit based employment, and prioritizing work-life balance, to name a few. Arguably, work-life balance has proved to be the most elusive. Perhaps, this can be traced to its all-pervasive nature as it tends to cut across maternity, childhood and child rearing, child labour, and family life. It is however not unachievable. The International Labour Organisation (ILO)'s goal is to encourage and promote equal opportunities for men and women to obtain fairly paid productive work. This decent work agenda is in tandem with the ILO constitution and is reflected in the ILO's four cardinal gender equality Conventions. This paper examines the efforts of the ILO to achieve gender equality in the work space by ensuring work-life balance, and how that has worked out so far, especially its effect on domestic laws of member countries. The paper also makes recommendations as to what more needs to be done to engender balance in work and family life, and attain the overall goal of gender equality at work.
