Book Description: The number of women living with HIV/AIDS is increasing steadily. Very few research studies have been done to understand the experiences of older women living with the disease. The purpose of my study was to understand the challenges faced by midlife women living and aging with HIV/AIDS through the progression of their illness. Exploratory case studies were developed of three women between the ages of 50-55 years of age. These women are only in their early midlife, but because of their risky life style factors, HIV treatment side effects and other comorbidities are dealing with disabilities, emotional impacts, difficult lifestyle adjustments, and decline in functional capacities. They are unable to use services provided for older adults and are excluded because of construction of age categories in providing services. We need to adopt a life course approach in providing community and healthcare services for these women, as their roles and challenges change in living and aging with HIV. The elements of the Chronic Care Model were applied to suggest how the quality of life of these women could be enhanced as their needs change throughout their lives.
