Book Description: The aim of this work was to furnish to botanists exploring the locality [of Washington, D.C.] and as an aid to beginners in practical botany. The extent of territory which has of late years been tacitly recognized by botanists here as constituting the area of what has been called "Flora Columbiana" is limited on the north by the Great Falls of the Potomac, and on the south by the Mount Vernon Estate, in Virginia, and Marshall Hall, just opposite this on the Marlyland side of the river, while it may reach back from the river as far as the divide to the east, where the waters fall into the Chesapeake Bay, and as far west as the foot of the Blue Ridge, so as not to embrace any of the peculiarly mountain forms.
