Book Description: He writes as a Fellow of the RIBA, on the following topics; setting up a literary committee to plan a comprehensive programme of papers for discussion at RIBA meetings (1867); commissioning the presidential portrait of Sir William Tite (1869); the RIBA Voluntary Architectural Examination, of which he agrees to act as Examiner (1870-1875): assessment of essays and drawings submitted for RIBA prizes; advocating that RIBA members who could not attend meetings in London should be able to vote by post (1878); lays a complaint before the Council against the conduct of three RIBA members, T.H. Wyatt, Henry Currey and F. W. Porter, in a law case between Kerr and John Walter MP (1880); proposed changes in the law of Ancient Lights (1883); proposed new charter for the RIBA (1885-1886); suggests setting up four standing committees for the RIBA (Art, Science, Literature & Practice) each to be supported by a department (1885); gives details of his dispute with Lt. Col. Myles Sandys over his fees for work on Graythwaite Hall [Cumbria] (1885) and asks Council to investigate the conduct of Charles Barry Jnr and Henry Currey in the case of Kerr v. Sandys (1887); offers to read a paper at the RIBA on the role of the architect as the director and administrator of a building contract; thinks it vitally important to recognise, in the new RIBA by-laws, that the Institute was founded for the express purpose of advancing the arts, sciences and literature of architecture as distinguished from the commercial objectives of a professional union (1888).
