Book Description: Born in Alberta in 1922, Simma Milner graduated from the University of Manitoba in English and Psychology in 1944. She was managing editor of the Manitoban, and reporter for the Winnipeg Free Press. In 1969, she received the Alumni Jubilee Award. -- Married to Leon Holt in 1949, Simma had started her career as a journalist for the Vancouver Sun in 1944. In 1958, she investigated the Freedomite movement in South America, and published her first book about it in 1964 (Terror in the Name of God). Her interests in social problems are reflected in her other books: Sex and the Teen Age Revolution (1967), The Devil's Butler (1972), and The Other Mrs. Diefenbaker (1982). -- Holt was the first Jewish woman in parliament (for the Liberal Party, 1974-1979), and she has been on the National Parole Board from 1981-1984. She has written columns for the Ottawa Sun, the Toronto Sun, Influence, and Vancouver Business, and she now resides in Maple Falls, Washington. -- The collection contains drafts, revisions and copies of Holt's books; correspondence with early Doukhobor leaders, transcripts of Freedomite trials, 1953-1962, and sources pertaining to Edna Diefenbaker; minutes of penitentiary and justice sub-committees, and parliamentary letters, 1974-1979. -- Separated: The Vancouver Express, 21 Feb.-15 May, 1970 ; An Apology for the Quakers / Robert Barclay, 1736 ; and Youngston's thesis on Molokans, 1930 (Mf 24). -- Restrictions apply to an interview with Peter Stursberg, 1987, and to the copying of unpublished materials. -- For related photograph and tape collections, see Pc 103 and Tc 66.
