Abstract: v Abstract Cognitive theory of depression stipulates that people with depression would show a mood congruent bias in their information processing. This study examined the proposition by looking at the effects of mood on recognition of facial expressions of emotion. After listening to depressing, neutral or elating music, 70 undergraduates judged a set of blended facial emotional expressions with respect to the emotions displayed (happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, disgust, rejection and invitation). As predicted, participants under depressed mood judged more negatively in ambiguous facial expressions (i.e., faces that displayed similar amounts of positive and negative emotions). A trend in the same direction was noticed for prototype expressions (i.e., faces that clearly showed a particular emotion).
