Book Description: "As unintended consequences of modernization become increasingly threatening to humanity, multidisciplinary perspectives in search of solutions have focused attention on the human-nature relationship, its inter-determination of human and ecological wellness, and its interconnection to the global socio-ecological crisis. The objective of this thesis was to design a wellness garden for Chatham University's Eden Hall campus, using theoretical and empirical evidence-based design principles. Research was gathered from interdisciplinary perspectives to develop a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic benefits of engaging with nature, and the ways in which garden design can enhance these therapeutic benefits, foster nature connectedness, and optimize holistic wellness. Incorporating elements shown to maximize the therapeutic benefits of nature, the garden design is intended to emphasize mental aspects of holistic wellness promotion, and cultivate mindfulness, as well as enhance the educational experience and future impacts of Chatham University's sustainability stewards." -- Abstract
