Book Description: Collection consists of three volumes maintained by Boston, Massachusetts, grocer Thomas Austin from 1794 to 1814. Volume one is a waste book with entries dated 1796-1798 recording sale of and payment for commodities including flour, coffee, brandy, rum, raisins, souchong tea, mustard, cloves, and sugar. Customers included physician Isaac Rand (1743-1822) and businessman Samuel G. Perkins (1767-1847). There are several loose accounts, leaf specimens, and newsclippings laid in to the volume, including a song entitled "The inebriate's lament." Volume two is a waste book with entries dated 1794-1814 for commodities including butter, cheese, sugar, coffee, brandy, and rum. The volume also records wine, gin, and other goods he bought at auction, and commodities acquired from other merchants. Volume three is a ledger dated 1796-1840, recording credits and debits for tea, coffee, raisins, brandy, and sugar, among other goods. There is an index to accounts laid in the front of the volume for customers including merchants Thomas and John Hancock, nephews of John Hancock (1737-1793), Samuel G. Perkins, and Isaac Rand. There are also lists of notes receivable, and an account to the town of Cambridge for visiting schools and calculating the number of children ages four to sixteen, and for providing other tools and services in 1839, signed by R.J. Austin, possibly a relative of Thomas Austin.
