Book Description: Bound almanac diary used by a Thomas Gibbons Taylor, a professional mariner, to record daily observations including ship location, weather, and general sailing observations for approximately fifteen voyages spanning the period from 1852 to 1865. Most notable of these are "Journal of Schooner Anglo American on a Guano Expedition to Lower California" (30 pages, April-July 1860), and the journal of the "Sea Witch of New London" (102 pages, March 1861 to February 1862) on a trading voyage to the Arctic. Interspersed throughout the journal entries for the voyages are other handwritten notes, observations, poems, doodles, sea ballads, pencil sketches of ships and riggings, penmanship exercises, color pen-and-ink sketches of signal flags and ships, numerous names of ships, sailors, voyages, dates, interactions with various Native American tribes, etc. The ship sketches include four small pencil sketches of the schooner Sea Witch and a pen-and-ink drawing of a fully rigged ship. Other details include a pen-and-ink map, "Chart of Plover Bay." Some of the later pages in the book also contain mounted newspaper clippings obscuring previous entries. Also includes a small amount of loose newspaper clippings probably intended to be added to the journal at a later date.
