Book Description: Heart rate, mean arterial pressure, right atrial pressure, and blood flow in the femoral and in the carotid artery were monitored in cats whose rectal temperatures were raised to 44 degrees C. Blood flows reached a maximum at rectal temperatures 42 to 43 degrees C and vascular resistances in these beds reached minimum values in the same temperature range. Right atrial pressure remained negative throughout the hyperthermic episode. The data support the view that circulatory failure found in extreme hyperthermia has a peripheral origin.
