Book Description: In elementary school, Hassan hoped to be the most popular kid ever. He loved to play tease and play tricks on the other kids, until one day a girl's mother called the principal's office. Mr. Owen's, the principal, stopped his teasing, but didn't know about his other problem. That was poor reading! Hassan hated to read and avoided it every chance he had. He barely read well enough to pass his elementary classes, even though he was given special homework assignments by his teacher, Ms. Lane. She gave him several books to read, but he didn't do it. Instead, he convinced his mother she needed to read them to him and then help him write his homework reports. The result was that Hassan barely graduated though his classes with the other kids his age. His love was to tinker with mechanical things. He liked to take things apart to see how they worked. Pieces of small clocks, broken radio's and other things were scattered around his bedroom, because most of the things he took apart, he could never put them back together again. Then one day that changed. His father helped him fix a broken go-cart and it changed Hassan's life. When he was In high school he worked to buy his own broken down car to fix up. He was so good at it in his school, he got a job at an auto repair company after high school. But when he discovered how much he needed to read the instruction manuals, he decided it was time to work hard and learn to read better. He regretted not doing his homework in Ms. Lane's class. But he was good at auto repair and managed to buy the business and have a great life with his wife and kids at Morgan's Pond.
