Human Influence on Macroinvertebrate Communities in Southeast Michigan Streams by PDF Summary

Book Description: Rivers are threatened by anthropogenic activities world-wide. The alteration of natural areas and the removal of dams in rivers have consequences on aquatic communities that researchers are just beginning to understand. This thesis details the impacts of land use alteration and dam removal on stream communities. Chapter 1 is an evaluation of how land-use change influences macroinvertebrate communities across twenty streams in Southeast Michigan (USA). Negative correlations were observed between urbanization and macroinvertebrate communities; in contrast positive correlations were observed between forest and agricultural cover. Chapter 2 is an investigation on how dam removal influences emergent-insect communities from Paint Creek (Michigan). Reaches upstream and downstream of a dam were repeatedly sampled before and after removal. Structural and functional changes in the community were observed, one year following the removal, resulting in a 40% reduction of emergent-insect biomass. Collectively, these investigations lend needed insights into how human activities influence aquatic communities.
