Gebhardt papers include a completed World War II Veterans Survey questionnaire which traces Gebhardt's military service and postwar activities and comments on various aspects of military life. He says the weapons were adequate, and since he was with a mechanized unit, he always had extra clothing and supplies available at all times in the Armored Personnel Carriers. Hot meals came in by supper time by helicopter in mermite containers. When he arrived at the long range reconnaissance platoon detachment, he lived in a headquarters. He questions why enlisted and officer jump pay was different and why pilots got extra pay. He describes in detail his experiences with the military justice system. Awards were unfairly distributed. The constant rotation of personnel was detrimental to unit efficiency. The most influential leaders were Non-commissioned Officers (NCOs), as the commissioned officers at the platoon and company levels were too young and inexperienced. He says that drug use was non-existent in the mechanized unit. He had little contact with civilians. For recreation the men played cards, listened to the radio, read, went to movies and went to the enlisted men's club. He also comments on the limitation on combat operations sent down from headquarters and how that harmed the unit's efficiency. He comments extensively on the Mai Lai incident.
