Book Description: Collection consists of an account book, correspondence, legal documents, and receipts of Joseph Hyde (born 1748), of Hallowell, Maine, and Hopkinton, Massachusetts, dated from 1763 to 1836. The account book contains entries from 1784 to 1791 related to farm labor and sale of butter, pigs and hay, as well as services provided by Joseph Hyde to his neighbors in Hallowell, including plowing and mowing fields with his oxen, and hauling rocks and boards. At various times, he also hired men to work his land. He bartered his goods and labor for the services of shoemakers and blacksmiths as well as leather, spirits and farm produce. The volume also lists highway taxes he paid from 1785 to 1791. Loose materials in the collection include receipts, an abatement document, notice of probate of the will of Moses Hyde, notes, and deeds, dated 1763-1836.
