Book Description: Series V: Professional organizations, 1961-1999 and undated, contains material produced by, or in partnership with, institutions outside of the University of Rochester pertaining to the organization and dissemination of research and other professional matters in quantum optics. Subseries I: Governmental agencies, 1966-1999 and undated, contains reports, proposals and correspondence created through Mandel's research projects in partnership with, and with funding from, various governmental organizations. Mandel's involvement with the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and the United States Army Research Office are prominently represented in this subseries, particularly through reports and proposals describing Mandel's individual research plans and outcomes. Additionally includes correspondence and official agency forms documenting project protocols. Subseries II: Optical Society of America [Optica], 1961-1999, documents Mandel's working relationship with the Optical Society of America, later named Optica, and aspects of the organization's history in the latter half of the twentieth century. Contains correspondence with the society's members, memoranda discussing meetings and other events, as well as several reports highlighting organizational shifts, including a potential name change and interactions with other professional optics societies. Correspondence and additional pieces of memoranda further reflect Mandel's involvement with the society's various committees, including his role on the Board of Directors Publications Committee. Subseries III: Research reports, 1961-1968, contains reports on research conducted in partnership with and submitted to various governmental and professional agencies. Physicists at a variety of institutions, particularly universities, authored the material which was presumably collected by Mandel. Research supported by the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories is abundantly represented in this subseries through a group of numbered reports indicating specific contracts. Series VI: Visual aids, 1974-1997 and undated, contains projection transparencies, lantern and photographic slides, in addition to printed and hand-drawn diagrams. Mandel likely used these materials for a range of purposes, including presentations at conferences, classroom instruction and lectures, as well as in articles. The lantern and photographic slides depict diagrams, formulas, and laboratory instruments. A small amount of the photographic slides shows various laboratory buildings and individuals, presumably graduate students, inside research laboratories.
