Yet the opal mined there, and the jewelry made, was distributed throughout the world. It was a vibrant time to be in the prime of one's life, though the hardship of raising a family there was unique in the world. From the central drive-in movie theater to the development of a thriving tourist trade, this authentic memoir depicts an Australia that few have ever read about or know about. "It was never my intention to write about Coober Pedy as per the statistics pages. For this you can contact the mining department and they will give you all the statistical information you want. What I wanted to do was to document the everyday life and small adventures of the people who built this unique town in the middle of nowhere. Every one of them deserve their names in the history books in a much better way than I am capable of doing and I hope somebody someday will properly do so. The illustrations in this volume are primarily from my return trip to Coober in 2013, with the assistance of my son, although there are also original and archival photographs of the time I was originally there. My intent by including them is to give a cumulative, parallel impression while reading about the town’s history of the way it appears today to those passing through.
