Book Description: Excerpt from Report of the Director of the Mint Upon the Production of Precious Metals in the United States During the Calendar Year 1885 Sir: I have the honor to present herewith my first Report as Director of the Mint on the Production of the Precious Metals in the United States for the calendar year 1885, being the sixth of a series of reports which have been prepared by this Bureau under annual appropriations and printed under the same title by order of Congress. The series is practically a continuation in part, after a hiatus of four years, of a series beginning with the report for 1867 by J. Ross Browne, as special commissioner, under a provision of the appropriation act of July 28, 1866, authorizing an expenditure of for the collection by the Secretary of the Treasury of reliable statistics and information concerning the gold and silver mines of the Western States and Terri tories, which shall include the labor and capital employed, the product and the modes of working the same, and which information shall be re ported to Congress.
