Draft of an Article Or Lecture on the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln, with Miscellaneous Materials Relating to Samuel A. Mudd and the Activities of Richard Mudd by Richard Dyer Mudd PDF Summary

Book Description: Photocopy of a typed draft, with manuscript corrections, of an article or lecture discussing the medical aspects of the Lincoln assassination, including the state of Lincoln's health at the time; the psychology of John Wilkes Booth and his motivations in the assasination; the death and burial of Booth, including the controversy over the identity of the corpse; and the actions of Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, who treated Booth's broken leg after the assassination. Accompanied by photocopy of letter from President Jimmy Carter, 24 July 1979, in response to Richard D. Mudd's appeal to have Samuel Mudd's conviction as a Lincoln conspirator set aside ("All legal authority vested in the President to act in this case was exercised when President Andrew Johnson granted Dr. Mudd a full pardon on February 8, 1869. Nevertheless, I wish to express my personal opinion that the declarations made by President Johnson in pardoning Dr. Mudd substantially discredit the validity of the military commission's judgment."); photocopy signed in ink by Richard Mudd. Also a collection of miscellaneous items sent by Richard D. Mudd on 27 March 1985 to Jennifer B. Lee, curator of the Lincoln Collection in the John Hay Library, including: an announcement of the revised 4th edition of The Mudd family of the United States (1983); another photocopy of the Carter letter, inscribed to the Lincoln Collection; 1984 Christmas greeting and family letter from Rose and Dick Mudd; typed transcript of a letter written by Samuel Mudd's fellow prisoner Edward Spangler, sent from Ft. Jefferson, Florida and printed in the Aledo [Ill.] weekly record, 25 Oct. 1865; and 2 clippings relating to lectures given by Richard Mudd in 1973 and 1984.
