They were part of the network of roads that covered the Roman world; for many centuries they continued to be the chief means of communication within the island; and while some of them are still to be seen in almost perfect condition, portions of many more form part of the foundations of roads now m use. The course of the roads was evidently planned with skill, and laid out with a complete grasp of the general features of the country to be passed through; the work of construo tion, however, was probably carried out under many masters, and perhaps not at the same time.
