Aitken believes that, the normal nutrition of the nerve-centres is impaired, and says that palsy of the vasomotor nerves connected with the carotids, thyroid gland and heart, is the explanation given of this disease; and that it coexists with wasting diseases, or supervenes upon them, such as leucorrhoea and menorrhagia in females, and hemorrhoids in males. Amenorrhoea, long continued hemorrhages, want of rest, and many other similar causes, have been assigned in different cases.
