William F. Strobridge Papers by William F. Strobridge PDF Summary

Book Description: General description of the collection: The William F. Strobridge papers include a completed Korean War Veterans Survey questionnaire, and a photocopy of his log for the I & R Platoon, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division from April to July 1951. In his questionnaire, Strobridge describes the inadequacies of supply services during the beginning of the Korean War and the lack of food during the withdrawal from North Korea. The supply situation was improved, in his opinion, by the presence of General Matthew Ridgway who infused 8th Army with an "offensive spirit" in 1951. Strobridge says that the lack of training in some officers scared him into accepting his battlefield commission. While in combat, Strobridge made the choice between frostbite or quickly responding in a firefight, received "timely and effective" fire support from many sources, and found the Chinese troops to be tough. He also says that captured prisoners of war (POWs) were treated by the book, unless they were children, and describes the usefulness of the Korean Augmentations to U.S. Army (KATUSA) soldiers who served with his unit. Strobridge's log covers operations that occurred in the Uijongbu corridor until mid-May, the remainder of May operations that occurred in the area east above Wonju, and June operations in western Korea and south of Chorwon to Pyongang.
